Panduit Cable Cleat Products for Short Circuit Protection
Panduit Cable Cleat for Short Circuit Protection White Paper
Panduit cable cleat solutions ensure cables remain contained in the event of a short circuit fault to minimize disruption and damage to personnel and property. Uniquely engineered for ease of installation and available in a range of applications and harsh environments, our cable cleats meet the needs of any project while providing on-the-job productivity, reliability, and safety.
Although there are several demanding tasks, one of the major requirements of a cable cleat is to protect people and equipment in the event of a short circuit on a cable system. Electric currents in conductors, which are laid adjacent to one another, produce electro-magnetic fields between these conductors. During a short circuit fault, the electric current turns into a magnetic force and the highest repulsive force between conductors is proportional to the square of the peak short circuit current. This is then followed by a residual, pulsating, oscillating stress at a frequency of twice the operating frequency, known as the fault RMS. However, it is accepted that the forces at the peak of the fault are the highest, the most instantaneous, and in turn the most destructive, when considering system protection.
Cleats mitigate the impact of a short circuit before fault protection devices can react and trip. IEC 61914 standard ensures that cable cleats can withstand and protect during a short circuit event.

The Stainless Steel Trefoil Cable Cleat offers protection against extreme environments and high short circuit current faults.
The cleat is made of 316L stainless steel, available in multiple sizes with cable range taking capability, and suitable for trefoil cable arrangements. The cleat features a nylon insert lock nut for vibration dampening and a removeable spacer for cable range taking.
Installation: Compatible with a wide range of cable diameters and installs using a separately sold mounting bracket or direct to the cable tray rung via fixing hole and user-supplied M8 bolt. Features 316L SS and removable spacer.
The Stainless Steel Buckle Strap Cleat is an effective option for protecting W against high short circuit fault current requirements in harsh environments. The strap is made of 316L stainless steel, has inherent cable range-taking, and is compatible with quad, trefoil, and multicore cables.
The Buckle Straps have rounded edges to protect from damaging the cable and are often used in combination with a cushion sleeve inserted between the strap and cable for added protection.
Installation: The cleat is installed after running the cable via a unique in the industry mounting bracket. It is tensioned and cut using a manually-operated, ratchet-style installation tool or a tension screw drive installation tool.
The Stainless Steel Locking Strap Cleat is an effective option for protecting against lower to medium short circuit fault current requirements in harsh environments. The strap is made of 316L stainless steel, has inherent cable range-taking, and is compatible with quad, trefoil, and multicore cables.
Similar to the Buckle Straps, the Locking Straps also have rounded edges to protect from damaging the cable and are often used in combination with a cushion sleeve inserted between the strap and cable for added protection.
Speed of installation of the locking Strap Cleats can be enhanced further by the use of a Battery Operated Installation Tool – PBTMT/E.
